Alabama Crimson Tide {RTR}

It all started with this man...Paul William "Bear" Bryant

If it wasn't for him, we would not be wearing the all very famous houndstooth. I just wonder why it took 30 yrs for it to become popular. Now you see it all over the place. Even other colleges wear it in their colors. They don't know it's an Alabama Crimson Tide thang.

Yes, they are #1 in the country, but they are #1 in my heart. There is no other sports team that is so dear to my heart. Why? I really don't know. Maybe I've caught the passion from living with such passionate fans as a child.

 My family has always loved Alabama football. Everyone I knew loved Alabama Football. Maybe I love them so much because the guys they usually choose, are such "Southern gents" They have a way, in my opinion, of choosing such classy southern men. (Of course there are those who are the exception. I will not mention names)

When I met my husband almost 20 yrs ago, I asked him who did he cheer for. (We had only been dating a couple of weeks.) He didn't know what I was talking about. I had to explain to him that if he was going to live in Alabama (He had just moved to Mobile,Al from Chattanooga,TN) that he had to choose a team...Alabama Crimson Tide or Auburn Tigers. His reply was, "I didn't know I had to choose." Well, I let him know that he HAD to. Well, after being around my family for just a short while, he decided to become an Alabama Crimson Tide fan and 20 yrs later, he still is. I think he loves it more than I. OK, well, not really.

So a new season begins and we are as excited as ever. I think fans are more excited about the unexpected. We don't really know what will happen. We love the thrill of the challenge that every SEC team can bring to our games. Just like people, each game has it's own personality. No 2 games are the same.

If you've never been to an Alabama Crimson Tide football game, I encourage you to do whatever it takes to go. There is nothing like it in the world. I can't explain the excitement, the energy, the comroddery, the unity, the FUN that everyone together brings. It's just good clean fun.

 For those who do not know what "RTR" stands for, well it's short for "Roll Tide Roll"

Where does the cheer  "Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer
Give ‘em hell, Alabama!"
come from? Well, I'm glad you asked.

The lyrics originate from The Rammer-Jammer, a student newspaper in the 1920s, and the yellowhammer, Alabama’s state bird. The cadence of the cheer was adapted from the Ole Miss cheer “Hotty Toddy” after then Ole Miss marching band director Dr. James Ferguson was appointed director of the Million Dollar Band. The cheer was long referred to as “Ole Miss”, and today the drum major’s signal is still the motioning of one arm in a full circle (an ‘O’).

The cheer has recently come under fire on account of its taunting nature and its use of the word “hell”. In a vote at Homecoming 2005, the question was posed to students of whether the cheer should be banned. 98% of students voted in favor of keeping the cheer, while only 95 students voted to have it banned.

So you ask, "Why do you love Alabama football so much well, this should explain it...

So a new season embarks on us and it all starts tomorrow against Michigan at Cowboy Stadium in Texas. Needless to say, "I'm freakin' excited! I'm not gonna get to make this game as my husband will be working weekends this fall. (Please say a prayer for him and the rest of the weekend crew)  I actually heard a guy last week say that he was going to quit where he works because he was on the weekend shift. That meant he was gonna miss his Alabama football games. That's how crazy our fans are.

So you will hear me talk a lot about my Crimson Tide because it's who I am. Here's the Alabama Tide Creed that explains a lot about it's fans.

That just about sums it up.

God bless Alabama Crimson Tide
